Devising med Viewpoint

- i samarbejde med Odsherred Teaterskole

This one-week workshop will look at the basic principles of Devising and will focus on Viewpoints as a tool in the creation of theatrical compositions.

Devising is the art of creating theatre as an ensemble, where the starting point is not to produce an existing written play, but to create one through a collaborative and investigative process. The group begins by working from a variety of stimuli, which can be anything from a theme, a concept, a piece of text, an image, a song or a basic scenario. They then engage in a process of exploration and experimentation of content and form. This then leads to an assemblage and editing process with finally a rehearsal period. The end composition is thus performed as a finished and fully rehearsed theatrical production. While each practitioner is equally responsible for the ownership of the piece, they still work within their various disciplines. In the current form of devising it is most common that there is a director guiding the process. Devised theatre takes on many forms and styles but it is often highly focused on the visual and physical non-linear elements of theatre

Viewpoints is a movement based improvisation which originated in the world of dance and was then adapted for actors and other disciplines by the New York based Anne Bogart’s SITI Co. It divides the basic elements of Time and Space into separate categories

Time Kinaesthetic Response, Repetition, Tempo, Duration
Space; Architecture, Spatial Relationships, Gesture, Topography, Shape

Viewpoints is a tool to create a heightened physical ensemble and equips the practitioners with a shared theatrical vocabulary which allows the creations of new works to be made quickly on the floor

In this workshop, we will initially work within the ensemble while building the language of Viewpoints. From here, we will continue this work as morning training while beginning to explore composition. Practitioners will at first work in short directed compositions and will then begin to create independent projects

While this is a very physical and practical work with a strong performance element, it is open to all disciplines.
