Developing text through Movement and Image

 

 

This is a workshop to explore the development of a dramatic text in a way that differs from a play reading. This workshop will explore the imagistic world of the play.

How a playwright can write scenic images, creating a concrete visual expression on the stage

Participants can bring texts that they are working on, but these must be submitted at least three weeks before the start of the workshop. We will also work with pre existing text as source material.

Areas covered within this workshop

  • In order to enrich the visual nature of the play, we will explore the development of text using movement, image and choreography in order to explore themes, motifs, subtext, characters
  • Challenging the economy of text . Can what you want to say be said in an image that is perhaps stronger than the text? Exploring how an image combined with a text can heighten the text even more
  • Viewpoint improvisations of image work within the text
  • The repetition of Viewpoints improvisations rich in image: where the writers present can develop the image by adding a dramaturgy to it or inserting text into it
  • Having a clash of text and movement. Using movement as an obstacle to heighten the text
  • Layering choreography onto text or text onto choreography


Workshop leader: Caroline McSweeney 

  • Caroline McSweeney holds a BA Contemporary Arts Degree UK, Certificate in Dramatherapy UK and MA in Drama Studies Dublin. She has trained in New York with Anne Bogart and The SITI CO..

    Caroline works as a freelance director. Previous work includes Det Norske Teatret Oslo and  Teater Momentum Odense where she was Co-Artistic Director with Jens August Wille. She regularly devises physical theatre productions at Det Danske Scenekunstskole Odense and has also directed at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts

    Caroline recently relocated Locus Theatre Company to Denmark and the first project was a collaboration between Denmark, Norway and Iceland with a  Theatre – In- Residence in Akureyri Iceland. Locus were also one of the Theatre- In- Residence at Kobenhavns Musikteater

    Caroline is one of the foremost workshop leaders in Viewpoints / Devising across Scandinavia and has taught in the state schools in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Germany and Ireland as well as workshops for professional actors, dancers, directors, scenographers, musicians, dramaturges etc
